#The Wet Carpet Drying Process

Ever wondered how the professionals dry wet carpets? Here is what we will provide

  1. Water Extraction - The first step is to extract as much water as possible using a portable extractor; think of it like a vacuum cleaner for water. Extraction removes the bulk of the sitting water and dramatically reduces the drying time and the chances of saving your expensive carpet.

  2. Air Flow - The second step is to establish airflow across the carpet, to help the water evaporate from the carpet. This is best done using air movers or fans explicitly designed to move large quantities of air in long, flat patterns. In cold climates or specific circumstances, this can be aided by the use of heat mats. These warm the air up and can help encourage evaporation.

  3. Dehumidification - Since air naturally dries surfaces very slowly, it is crucial to use a dehumidifier to supercharge the drying process. Dehumidifiers remove large amounts of moisture from the air, allowing the water in the carpet to evaporate faster and dry the carpet more effectively. Dehumidification is especially helpful in Australia as the air is often quite humid, which slows down drying.

  4. Mould Remediation (As needed) - In some cases, there may be a need for mould remediation if the moisture has been present for some time. You can read more about our mould remediation process here.

These are the main steps for drying a wet carpet and the steps we will take to solve your wet carpet problems. There may be a need to lift parts of the carpet in order to create airflow underneath. We will also take numerous moisture samples across several days to track the drying process, and will provide those readings directly to your insurance company if it is an insurance claim. In some cases, if the water has been sitting for a while or the water does structural damage, a carpet might not be savable. In these cases, we can remove and dispose of the carpet appropriately. No carpet will be removed without express approval from the owner or insurance company.

#Frequently Asked Questions

Does the wet carpet smell go away?

Yes! Proper wet carpet treatment will remove all the sitting water odour. We can provide a cleaning process after the drying is complete, if necessary, to remove the smell. If there is still a foul smell after all the drying and cleaning, there may be other things in the room that were water damaged in the initial event.

Can I use a Wet-Dry Vac to Clean a Carpet?

After a water damage event, it is always good to give your carpets a clean to remove any contaminants. Using a wet-dry vac or water extractor alone will probably not be enough to remove all the water from the carpets. You will still likely need to use airflow and dehumidification to dry the carpets properly.

Is Wet Carpet Dangerous?

Any sitting water can pose health risks and contribute to serious structural and air quality problems. Not drying a carpet properly after a water spill can encourage mould growth, sitting water can become contaminated, and water can affect buildings’ structural integrity in some cases. It is essential to dry wet carpets as soon as possible and to use professionals with the right equipment and training to do it correctly.
